Colombia is a constitutional republic in northwestern South America. Its neighbors are: Venezuela and Brazil to the east, Ecuador and Peru to the south, Caribbean Sea to the north, Panama to the northwest, and Pacific Ocean to the west. It is very ethnically diverse, with a rich cultural heritage. Located partially on the Pacific Ring of Fire, it is subject to many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The landscape is dominated by the Andes mountains. At east form the Andes lays the savanna of the Llanos, part of the Orinoco River basin, and, in the far south east, the jungle of the Amazon rainforest. Tourism has quickly developed due to the president’s "democratic security" strategy. Main tourist attractions are: the Candelaria, Cartagena, Popayan, the Las Lajas Cathedral and the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá. Together with these, numerous festivals attract tourists every year. Colombia is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. |
