South Dakota is a state in the Midwestern part of the United States. Its name comes from the Lakota and Dakota Indian tribes. It is limited by North Dakota to the north, Nebraska to the south, Minnesota and Iowa to the east, and Montana and Wyoming to the west. Pierre is the capital while Sioux Falls is the largest city. The state is divided by the Missouri River. The eastern part of the state is heavily used in crops growing, due to the fertile soil, while in the western part, ranching is the dominant agricultural activity. The Black Hills, mountains, are located in the southwest part of the state. The area is of great religious importance to local American Indian tribes. Mount Rushmore is a major state tourist destination in the Black Hills. Historically dominated by an agricultural economy and a rural lifestyle, South Dakota has recently sought to diversify its economy to attract and retain residents. However, it is still largely rural. |
