Vatican City is a city-state situated on the Vatican hill, within the city of Rome, the capital city of Italy. With almost 44 hectares, and over 800 inhabitants, it is the smallest country in the world area and population. It is ruled by the bishop of Rome—the Pope. The Pope is the head of the state and the head of government. The Pope lives in the Papal Apartments inside the Papal Palace just off St. Peter's Square. It is also his workplace. The country is one of the few that have not become a member of the United Nations. The Corpo della Gendarmeria acts as a police force. More than half of its territory consists of the Vatican Gardens. They are decorated in the Renaissance and Baroque style, with fountains and sculptures. |
