The Bailiwick of Jersey is a British dependent territory off the France coast. It is situated in the English Channel, approximately 12 nautical miles from the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, France, and approximately 87 nautical miles south of Great Britain. It is the largest and southern of the Channel Islands. Jersey international identity is different from the UK one. The United Kingdom is responsible for the defense of the island. Jersey is not a full member state of the European Union but it is included in the customs territory of the European Community. Elizabeth II's title of head of state is that of Duke of Normandy.
