The Solomon Islands is a country in the South Pacific Ocean. It lies east of Papua New Guinea and has about one thousand islands. It is a constitutional monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state, being locally represented by a Governor-General. It is a member of the South Pacific Commission, the United Nations, South Pacific Forum, Commonwealth, and the International Monetary Fund. The Economy is based on timber exports but as forests were dangerously overexploited, the amount has been dramatically reduced. Major exports also includes copra and palm oil. Recently, gold production was started. The islands are also rich in mineral resources as lead, zinc, nickel. An important industry is tourism, especially diving. |
