The United Republic of Tanzania is a country in central East Africa. It is limited by Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south, the Indian Ocean to the east. Its landscape is mountainous in the northeast, with Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. To the north and west are the Great Lakes of Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika. Plains and arable land are found in the center of the country. The economy is based on agriculture. The country has large amounts of natural resources including gold, diamonds, coal, iron ore, uranium, nickel, chrome, tin, and platinum, but they are scarcely exploited. Tourism sector is also very important for the economy. There are many beautiful national parks like the world famous Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. |
